Common Ice Cream Toppings
Wednesday, February 11th, 2015
There are many ways to enjoy ice cream. For example, you can enjoy ice cream in a cone, mixed into a milkshake or even pressed in between two cookies to create a sandwich. However, one of the most popular ways to enjoy a scoop or two of your favorite flavor is by adding toppings. Top your ice cream off with a variety of flavored syrups, sprinkles, fruit, candy or nuts and sweets. These toppings enhance the flavor of the ice cream and take your dessert to the next level.
Flavored syrups
Some of the most popular ice cream toppings come in syrup form. These syrup flavors include the traditional tastes of hot fudge, strawberry and caramel, along with fun flavors like marshmallow, white chocolate, and peanut butter. Flavorful syrup turns any ice cream into the sundae of your dreams.
Sprinkles
Sprinkles are a type of tiny, crunchy candy, and their texture complements the creamy smoothness of ice cream perfectly. Also called “jimmies,” sprinkles have been gracing the tops of ice cream scoops since the 18th century in some form or fashion. This topping comes in many forms, including rainbow colors, chocolate flavors and even shapes like hearts, stars or seasonal decor. There are also round sprinkles called nonpareils, which have the same taste as regular sprinkles but a different shape.
Fruit
A healthier alternative to sprinkles and syrups, fruit is a tasty way to enhance any type of ice cream. Some of the most popular fruit toppings include bits of strawberries, blueberries, bananas, peaches, mangos, pineapples and raspberries. Fruit toppings are naturally sweet and add some nutrients to your delicious dessert.
Candy
Another popular topping is candy of all types. Crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, miniature M&M’s, gummy bears and Kit Kats are just a few types of candies you have the option to top off your ice cream with. Just about any candy bar that can be crushed and sprinkled is an option to use as an ice cream topping. Mixing more than one candy makes the treat even sweeter.
Nuts and sweets
Nuts are a crunchy, savory topping that mix well with syrups and candy to create a winning combination. Pecans and caramel syrup can lend a Turtles flavor to a sundae, while peanuts and chocolate sauce are a delicious duo.
